Samaritans Smart Car tours the country in drive to support local community

Volunteers from Putney Samaritans are gearing up to make this year’s 24:7 national awareness campaign the best yet with the first-ever national Smart Car tour, sponsored by Admiral. Motoring through England, Scotland and Wales, the iconic green Smart Car will zoom into action on Saturday 10 July and will be on the road until Saturday 24 July when it reaches its final pit stop in Birmingham. Visiting over 175 Samaritans branches across the three nations and covering almost 5,000 miles during its two-week tour, the car will be driven by local MPs, mayors, celebrity supporters and Samaritans volunteers. The car will take to the roads day and night, raising awareness of Samaritans’ 24:7 service for people in emotional distress and those at risk of suicide. Arriving at Putney Branch, in Felsham Road Putney, on Friday 23 August at round 16.30 the car will be welcomed by members of the branch before leaving for its next stop at Croydon Branch.

Welcome to Putney Samaritans website

Samaritans provides confidential emotional support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to people of all backgrounds, who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

The Branch was founded in 1970 and is one of over 200 branches in the UK and Ireland. We are run entirely by volunteers and like all Samaritans branches receive no government funding and have no affiliations to religious organisations. Also like other branches, we are autonomous from the national charity, supporting ourselves through our own fundraising efforts while promoting the mission and values of the movement.

The Putney branch of Samaritans is looking for people from all walks of life to become volunteers. It doesn't matter what your background or experience is, all we need are people with the ability to listen without passing judgement. 'Join us?'

If you would like to find out more about volunteering, the first step is to attend one of our Information Meetings. Here in an informal and relaxed environment you will have the opportunity to meet some of our volunteers, find out about the work of Samaritans and how to apply to become a volunteer here at Putney. If you then decide to apply, you will be invited to an interview followed by a selection day. Successful applicants are then invited to join our Initial Training Course, which we hold three times a year - in autumn, winter and spring.

We hold regular information meetings and the times of the next meetings are:

Monday 9 August	19.30 - 21.30
Wednesday 1 September	19.30 - 21.30

You don't need to let us know in advance if you are coming - just come along on the day. Refreshments are served 15 minutes beforehand, and the session lasts around 2 hours. All the meetings are held at our Putney premises. We do ask if you can be punctual.
